If you are looking for a unique hike in small group and a short drive from the south, then this hike is your best shot!

At only a stone´s throw away from the bustling tourism industry in Gran Canaria´s South, a whole different world awaits you. Once you enter the narrow ravine of Arguineguín with its vertical rock walls towering above you and the smell of green palm groves tickling your nose, you know you have embarked on an adventure into the great outdoors. The sleeping village of Cercados de Espino, where we start our hiking in Gran Canaria, is your gateway to the real Gran Canaria and to the way it was before tourism started booming in the late sixties. This excursion doesn´t only consist of a hike and a tapas lunch; it´s also your opportunity to travel in time.

This short but spicy 6km hike starts right behind the town´s church where we hit an old semi-paved “camino real” that leads us to an area called Los Acebuches. This trail was once used by shepherds who moved their transhumance herds to higher pastures in summer time. As we walk up past their abandoned sheds, we will see, feel and smell many endemic plants, some of them quite rare. This is a hike that you experience with your five senses. Not only will the spectacular views make your eyes sparkle with joy,  the smell of the wild flowers that color the landscape after the first heavy rain falls, will make you fall in love with Gran Canaria´s nature. Endemic and migratory birds will be singing along as we make our way up to the highest point. At the equator of our hike, below ancient pine trees, we will have our picnic. The views reach as far as la Montaña de Tauro: one of the prehipanic population´s sacred mountains. The blowing wind gives the canyons a touch of solitude which seems unreal considering the fact that Mogán´s hotels are only a 15 minutes drive away. On our way down, we will be able to see the village of Cercados de Espino and our final destination: its local tapas bar.

This is a hike that takes possession of your heart and makes you feel alive!
